EPL Roundup – City hit Pompy for six as United and Chelsea draw

By: Rob | September 21st, 2008

City hit Pompy for sixApologies for my slackness this weekend, its been a bit mad my end. But I am here now, and I will give you all the complete lowdown on this weekends scores, including a big big win for Manchester City against Portsmouth, and the top-two teams in the land playing out a event-packed draw. There’s more misery for Spurs, a fantastic result for Stoke, and three goals for Arsenal, right after the jump.

Saturday

Stoke fans will be celebrating the fact that they achieved what Manchester United could not, last week, as they managed a 0-0 against Liverpool. They rode thier luck, especially when a Steven Gerrard Free-kick was controversially ruled out, but they got the result that they wanted.

Bolton went ahead against Arsenal, but the Gunners fired back with three goals, Eboue and Bendtner in quick succession, and then a great team move, involving Adebayour, Wallcott and eventually Denilson sealed the match.

Blackburn have looked inconsistant this season, so they will be happy that they grabbed a 1-0 against Fulham, Rovers goal coming late on in an otherwise uninspired match.

Sunderland beat Boro in the North East derby, a predictably scrappy affair, which included a Downing missed penalty. Sunderlands goals came late on but i doubt Black Cats fans will be complaining.

Both Newcastle and West Ham have been going through a bit of turmoil with regard to managers, Newcastle are still managerless, but West Ham have quickly appointed the former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola, and he’ll be happy with his start, as West Ham strolled to a 3-1 win, with two goals thanks to Zola’s fellow countryman David Di Michelle.

Sunday

The two biggest teams of recent times faced off and it was an event filled game. Deco got injured in the warm up, Rickie Carvalho got injured early on, and Van der Saar had to come off after injuring himself bringing down Malouda. United went one-up in the first half thanks to Park, who tapped in after Petr Cech spilled Dietmar Berbatov’s strike right in front of him. Chelsea dominated the second half, and Joe COle and Nicky Anelka should have got at least one goal each. Kalou scored with a great header in the last 10 minutes to secure a point for the Blues.

Manchester City hit Portsmouth for six this afternoon, with six different goalscorers. Jo, Dunne, Robinho, Wright-Phillips, Evans and Fernandes all got thier names on the scoresheet in a very, very impressive rout of last seasons FA Cup winners.

Hull managed to get a draw against Everton, helped by a Phillip Neville Own Goal. Cahill and Osman got goals for the Toffees, but Turners early goal for Hull made sure the score was 2-2 come the final whistle.

The surprise result of the day perhaps, though, is that Wigan and Spurs played out a 0-0 draw. I say surprise, mainly because Spurs defence last season was bloody terrible, and Wigan’s strikers are in form. The Latics don’t have an amazing defence either. Still, thats what we love about this game.
