It’s nearly impossible to pick a side here–on the one hand, you don’t need to watch the entire 90 minutes to realize that Wayne Bridge’s crap defense led to conceding two goals; on the other hand, pundits like Alan Hansen are, generally, pompous idiot windbags. Can we call it a draw?

Clearly city were rubbish until the end. I watched the game and I could have gotten all i needed from the scoring summary.

I think Hughes has a point, in that what we see on MotD isn’t always a realistic depiction of what actually happened in the game.

The thing is (and I’m not sure everyone in the UK fully appreciates this) it’s edited together so much better than other highlight shows. Have you ever seen the Premier League Review show for comparison? Or Fox Soccer Sunday+? It’s just all the shots slapped together.

MotD gives you a feel of the flow of the match, which is much more enjoyable to watch (because you don’t notice the jumps) but also a lot more deceptive because you feel like you’ve watched 90 minutes, when in fact you’ve only watched ten or so.

Or maybe I just need a new watch.

On Motd Gordon Strachan did a tactical overview on Ashley Cole while he was exceeding as an Arsenal attacking left back. He showed how someone from the midfield would slot in defense to allow him to do it without leaving a huge hole. It also had a lot to do with the pace of their centre back at the time.

Hansen was highlighting how Bridge is trying to play like Cole (surely an influence at the other Bridge) but tactically the team weren’t slotting in.

You expect this sort of stuff when a lot of new players join a club and you can bet that Hughes is in training this week concentrating on improving that positional sense.

Bridge’s performance against Croatia was the worst I’ve ever seen in an England shirt. Though the Man City team need to take collective responsibility for his rush of blood to the head runs.

    @ish -

“Yes the CB’s have scored some goals but many of those goals came from set pieces and the few that didnt were just very good strikes from vermaelen(from a distance).”

how exactly did you want them to score? these are the CBs we’re talking about remember. i can’t really find fault with CBs that come up and score on set pieces and occasionally make a run from deep and score from outside the box…

and as MoMoney said, 5 points back with a game in hand is pretty nice, and happens to be better than 18 other teams.

finally, arsenal have started “winning tough.” 3-2 comeback away at standard liege after being 2-0 down inside 10 minutes? or, if you’d like a league example, a 1-0 win away against a very solid fulham side. it might actually be the worst 90 minutes the arsenal have played this season, but it was quickly forgotten because they scraped out the win.

while i agree there’s a long way to go, i think you have to give credit where it’s due.

Of course Hughes has a point: the MOTD pundits don’t watch all the games. Heck, I’d be surprised if they watch half of them.

They’re too busy spending 25 minutes in highlights of any match involving the big four and then another 10 minutes breaking things down — even if nothing happened in the match, like what happened on Sunday.

Although its quite refreshing to see highlights longer than 30 seconds on MOTD (unlike FSC, ESPN, et al), the punditry is borderline masturbatory toward the big for.

I’ve been watching this show every week and I would have to agree but I think it’s even more obvious when it comes to being critical of the reffing. Now last weekend isn’t a good example because one game in particular was a sad day for referees everywhere. However in general I feel the referees are commented on, and then somewhat tossed aside as if no thought should be put into it, they just suck.

To be fair, if I looked like Tevez, I’d probably want to go ahead and retire–find a nice little belltower to live in or bridge to hide under for the rest of my days…

This saddens me. I still think Tevez made the wrong decision to leave Man Utd. The guy scores lots of goals, and big goals too. If he stuck it out I’d imagine he would have gone on to have a nice strike rate with the red devils too. The thing is that Tevez has always gone for the money, and the stature of club he has gone onto has always been UP. I doubt he will retire… he’s probably just frustrated that the Man City project isn’t panning out the way it seemed. The guy is a great striker, and I don’t care what he looks like. I hope he’ll stay in the game purely for the gamessake of losing a great player.

  • Suma-Group |  November 13th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

    cornercorner

    Hallo,

in keinem Fall verbessert.

Nun
will keiner mehr was davon wissen.

    http://www.sms77.de/t,2994-Quality-SMS-nicht-mehr-ueber-deutsche-Routen.html

Suchmaschinen-Optimierungsdienste braucht kein Mensch! Die versprechen alle das Blaue vom Himmel. Siehe
Emion!

I disagree with Hughes on this one, the comments were entirely fair given the nature of the mistakes, and unfortunately for defenders, it doesn’t matter if they deal with 80% of their duties well, they get judged for their mistakes, which were so basic in City’s case, they had to be vilified. Hughes is just doing his job, protecting the fragile confidence of his players by directing criticism elsewhere. It’s looking increasingly unlikely City can break the top 4 this season, but given I live in Holland, I won’t be betting on it, as this http://tiny.cc/A9E8V shows, the value I get is terrible!
