Gerrard wins FWA Player of the Year + Have Your Say
By: Rob | May 13th, 2009
The Football Writers Association have violently disagreed with the PFA and decided to give Player of the Year to Steven Gerrard. Congratulations are in order for the Liverpool Captain – although, no-one asked me. I’m a football writer. Sort it out FWA!
Anyway, this season has been an interesting one for player awards, purely because unlike last year, there is no really obvious, inevitable choice. So as a forshadowing to our own EPL Offside awards (coming soon!) we’re going to give you a chance to have a say as to you think has been the best player in the Premier League this season.
I’ve asked various bloggers on the Offside to pick the player in their team who they think deserves the accolade the most, and over the next week, I’ll weekly be revealing who they chose and their arguments for them. There are certainly some interesting choices in there.
Before I start that though, I want to give you (yes You!) the humble reader a chance to get your writing up here on The Offside. Basically, if there is a player who you really think should get player of the year, leave me a comment telling me who it is. If that person hasn’t already been covered by one of our bloggers, I’ll drop you an email, and I’ll let you put up an argument for who should be player of the year on this very page. I don’t mind who you are, who you support, or if you’re a blogger in some other part of the Offside, one and all are welcome.
Sound exciting? Then get your thinking cap on, and get back to me.

Gerrard also won the PFA fan’s player of the year. He is easily the best all-round player in England, if not the world. No one has an a more complete game.

For an all-round player he has an awful first touch. [/devil's advocate]

I genuinely think Tuncay Sanli deserves player of the year

I think Frank Lampard deserves that award – he’s done more for his team and the international team than Gerrard has and he wasn’t even considered to be on the list. Frank Lampard was seriously overlooked – he is my Footballer of the Year but I do congratulate Gerrard too. In the pick of the list though – Vidic should have won it.

I thought frank Lampard should be the one, considering his consistency through out year in and year out especially this player award is covering for the period of 07/08~looking back no matter how’s Chelsea was in turmoil Frank Lampard remains as solid as ever considering him as a midfielder scoring an average 20goals per season!! And not to say his appearances in the England squad. That’s outstanding!!Nevertheless, congrats to Stevie.

the slapdash/halfwit case for berba:
as far as the berba haters go. i won’t give up the mancrush…look here:
berba’s got 14 goals for us this year. behind only rooney (20) and c-ron (26). did you expect him to score more than either of them? cristiano scored 42 goals last year…if you’re thinking berba should’ve scored more than him you’re crazy.
he’s tied with lampard and van persie for the league lead in assists with 10. that’s more than gerrard, ashley young, fabregas, etc etc…the next closest guy on our team is giggs with 8.
his actim rating is the highest on our team 4th highest in the league…yea it’s heavily biased towards forwards…there’s a full explanation of what exactly it is on the prems website…it might be some bullshit stat but nonetheless “What kind of stats are produced?
Actim Stats are a collection of team, player and match statistics. They are derived from all the actions that take place during a match, including goals, shots on target, corners, assists, clean sheets, fouls, off-sides, passes, tackles, blocks and clearances. The raw data can be used to generate a wide range of tables and statistics such as player profiles, team and player head to heads and form guides.”
not bad for a dude a year into the squad which he didnt even get an offseason training camp with. he’s the pivot for everything we do out there…he’s the key to us confusing the crap out of defenses this year…they all swarm around him and play the ball off of him and play some real quality stuff. he’ll only get better and we’ll only get better with him in the squad every week.

Agree matt, Berba is fast becoming one of our best players at United. Some fools are saying we should sell him to fund Tevez, but dont realise his contribution to almost everything we do. Personally, I think we should sign Tevez aswell, as his injection of pace from the bench is amazing, anyone that has an ability to change the pace of the game gives us a chance of winning.
And like you said, no summer training camp. Hopefully next season he will be even more settled and become the cantona we all thought he could be.
