Venables To The Rescue?

By: Rob | September 25th, 2008

El Tel To The Rescue?Former England manager Terry Venables has confirmed he is in talks with Newcastle United about becoming caretaker manager untill the club sorts out a takeover. It wouldn’t be the first rescue job the man they used to call El Tel has performed in the North East, he saved Boro from certain doom a few years ago as well.

Venables was in the frame to replace Booby Robson back in 2004, but that was in the pre-Mike Ashley days. Kenny Dalglish is being talked up as the other short term alternative for Ashley.

While satirists will have a field say with the “cockney mafia” rubbish thats hanging around St James Park recently, if this comes through it has to be good news for the club. Venables might be recently remembered for being Steve McClaren’s number 2 in the England set-up, but those old enough to remember the England team he inhereted from Graham Taylor that he turned into worldbeaters in Euro 96, will always have a great deal of respect for the man. More as it happens.

I’m in that camp. Will always like the guy for putting that team together and for getting one last good tournament out of Gazza.

Other great El Tel moment: his “are you sick of sugar?” commercial for Canderel artificial sweetener at the height of his row with Alan Sugar. Genius.
