‘Keegan still boss’ as confusion rules at Newcastle
By: Rob | September 3rd, 2008
Bit of a trying day on Tyneside yesterday. First it was though Kevin Keegan resigned as manager of Newcastle, then it was thought he’d been sacked, then finally Newcastle utterly failed to clear up the situation, by saying that Keegan was not fired.
Keegan failed to take training again this morning, but Newcastle United have insisted that the former Liverpool and Hamburg striker is still the boss.
To sum up the situation at the moment – nobody seems to have a clue what is going on. The Guardian have it that Keegan is still manager. The Times has it that Keegan is all set to quit football alltogether. Sky has it that the club is in crisis meetings with the manager.
What is completely bizzare is that the directors seem to have pushed Keegan, who they know is a fragile person who walked away from Newcastle before, as well as the England job, to absolute breaking point, while still being happy for him to carry on. The cynic in me suggests they just want him to quit so they don’t have to pay him severance pay.
More will follow I’m sure. I don’t see him lasting forever in this situation.
