Keegan not fired afterall? Will he be manager in the morrow?
By: Rob | September 2nd, 2008
So this morning rumours abound that Kevin Keegan had walked out on Newcastle United, as he hadn’t taken the training session. Then rumours came around that he had been sacked due to a row with Dennis Wise and club owner Mike Ashley, over the transfer policy. Then, six hours after all that, Newcastle released a statement announcing thier support for the manager.
God knows what is happening on the Tyne. The statement read as follows:
“Kevin has raised a number of issues and those have been discussed with him.
“The club wants to keep progressing with its long-term strategy and would like to stress that Kevin is extremely important, both now and in the future.
“Newcastle United values the effort and commitment shown by Kevin since his return to St. James’ Park and wants him to continue to play an instrumental role as manager of the club.
“For the avoidance of doubt the club has not sacked Kevin Keegan as manager.”
So it says he isn’t sacked. It also doesn’t catagorically say he’s still manager either. Keegan has remained bizzarely silent on the matter.
This seems to be all about transfers. Keegan was reportedly told that any of his players could be sold – even though he told Ashley the club needed 4 quality signings. The offering of Joey Barton and Micheal Owen to other clubs appears to be the last straw.
The main thing really, is that even if he does wake up tomorrow still manager of Newcastle, how much longer can he actually stay there? What has been highlighted is all the problems with the whole system. Someone of that trio – Keegan, Wise or Mike Ashley has to go. They just can’t function together.
I feel sorry for Newcastle fans – they have no idea whats going on at the club that they love.
