Its Official: Keegan has walked away from Newcastle.
By: Rob | September 4th, 2008
The confusion at St James Park from the last couple of days is finally over, as Kevin Keegan has officially left the Newcastle United management. Keegan’s statement reads:
“I’ve been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible,” Keegan said in a statement. “It’s my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want.
“It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle United do well in the future and I feel incredibly sorry for the players, staff and most importantly the supporters. I have been left with no choice other than to leave”
It is thought that this will cost KK a cool £2m. And its the story we’ve all been talking about – manager’s not having complete control. Its strange, as I’ve said elsewhere on The Offside that a small club like Bristol Rovers can work the Director of Football/Manager double act, but a big one like Newcastle can’t seem to make it work.
Who, then, is going to want to take over the Newcastle job? Is anyone crazy enough to want it now? The only person I can think of that might want it is Dennis Wise, which might well be the root of this problem in the first place.
Newcastle fans are not going to be happy. Kevin Keegan, in his first spell at the club took them from struggling Div 1 (Championship as it is now) side, to a 12 point lead at the top of the Premiership. He hasn’t had a chance to have an impact this time around, but it seems to me, that he’s still a hero to the Newcastle United fans. Mike Ashley claims to be a man of the people on Tyneside, but he’s effectively forced out the supporters biggest hero.
