One Down: But Who Will Join West Brom in the Championship
By: Rob | May 18th, 2009
So farewell, West Brom, it was nice having you. Any attempt to stay up using good football, with brilliant fans (they sang and cheered their hearts out as their side went down to Liverpool for example) is alright by me. Maybe we’ll see you again soon.
It just wasn’t as effective as Stoke’s Wimbledon-circa-1987 football. But then what is? They probably didn’t win as many fans as you guys did this season.
Just try not to think about whose replacing you, as it’s two sides from your neck of the woods, including you’re local rivals. Sorry.
Moving on then, two other teams have to join West Brom and play in the Championship next season. Sunderland can guarentee their safety with a win tonight, and Portsmouth are now safe. Which leaves the bottom of the table looking like this
—————> Played W D L For A +/- Points
16 Sunderland 36 9 9 18 31 48 -17 36
17 Hull City 37 8 11 18 39 63 -24 35
18 Newcastle United 37 7 13 17 40 58 -18 34
19 Middlesbrough 37 7 11 19 27 55 -28 32
20 West Brom 37 8 7 22 36 67 -31 31
West Brom then are gone. Boro can stay up if they win on the last day of the season and both Newcastle lose and Hull lose by enough to switch around the goal difference. They play against West Ham at Upton Park last, and the hosts have nothing to really play for.
Newcastle meanwhile, looked like they might survive, untill a loss against Fulham plunged them back into the bottom three. They need to do better than Hull do to survive. A draw might keep them up on Goal difference if Hull lose, and a win will be enough if Hull don’t take all three. They have a tricky game against Aston Villa.
Hull have it in their own hands again after a draw that could have been a win against Bolton. Now they just have to do better against Man United, who already have the title sewn up and a Champions League game against Barca to worry about.
So, tell me dear readers, based on the above Who is going down?

I’ll be supporting Hull next weekend, because they were the only Prem team to show some class with the whole crests issue. Come on you Tigers!

errr, the poll only lets you vote for one…
My heart is pulling for the tigers, but my head says that the only reason they’re even in this discussion is their breathtaking run of form to start the season. If they stay up, will next season be more like the 1st bit this year or the 2nd bit? If they can’t duplicate their amazing run next year then we’ll all be disappointed I think.

I’m guessing that next year Hull are gonna be like Derby. I just cant see them replicating this years points tally, even if the wins are spread out over the season, instead of concentrated at the start. I wont be supporting them on the weekend (United fan – come on youngsters!). However, I dont see Boro or Newcastle getting points either, sorry…
