What is to Become of the Big Four

By: Rob | May 5th, 2010

Big FourSo big match tonight will/could decide who is going to sit fourth in the Premier League this season, and thus qualify for the Champions League (qualifiers). The match is of course between Spurs and Manchester City which means one of them will finally fulfil their promise. Meanwhile the other one will face another season staring in.

Obviously this means that there is to be a change in the supposed Big Four (Chelsea, Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool) that before this season bestrode English Football like a colossus. And while three of the four still will fill places 1-4, they’ve looked far more fallible than ever before.

So looking ahead to next season, how do you see it going? Will Liverpool just bounce back (as they did the last time the Big Four party was broken up) making this season just a blip? Will either Spurs or City just replace Liverpool in the big four (thus making tonights game beyond massive), or does this signal a changing of the tide, where fourth place at the very least can be interchangeable and won by a number of teams?

I’m pretty tempted to suggest its the latter. Liverpool look a bit of a mess at the moment, and unless they get bought out, I can’t see them bouncing back that far. But as I said yesterday, only a fool predicts what Liverpool will do.

Meanwhile if either Spurs or Manchester City make it to fourth spot, while it will signal a spending spree on the kind of players they previously would not have access to (Mancini has defined finishing fourth the difference between getting Fernando Torres and not) its not like the other team will shy away from spending money anyway.

The extra games in the Champions League on either squad who are both jumping into the new (the last time either took part in the tournament it was known as the European Cup), might be a distraction from the league and fourth place will be up for grabs again.

That is assuming they get through the Qualification Rounds, which nowadays, aren’t the bye they used to be.

It is great however that in some form a different side will be representing us in Europe. It’ll be fascinating to see how either gets on.

It’s sad though because before this season, every team dreaded facing Liverpool in the CL

Sad to say, but absent new ownership willing to put money into the team/build a new stadium that dramatically increases revenue, Liverpool may be on the outside looking in for a while — Manchester City have seemingly limitless resources and a lot of talent (and will only become a more attractive destination if they qualify for the Champions League), and Spurs have a really good group of mostly young talent and quite a bit of depth.

Liverpool look a bit of a mess at the moment, with really only a couple of really high-quality players, several of whom may not be around much longer, and a manager that looks to be on the way out. Bad times at Anfield for the next couple of seasons, I’m afraid.
