Scolari gets a bit of cash as Bridge heads to Manchester
By: Rob | January 2nd, 2009
Having been told he’ll be working on a one-in one-out basis this January, Big Phil Scolari will be very pleased with the news that Wayne Bridge’s transfer to Manchester City is almost done, the clubs agreeing on a faintly ridiculous £12m.
The left-back will travel to Manchester this evening in view of agreeing terms and having a medical tomorrow morning.
Bridge joined Chelsea six years ago for £7m and has played 87 times for the club. To me it seems that Chelsea are getting a pretty good deal out of selling someone who is obviously a second-choice left back behind Ashley Cole, and Scolari is expected to put the money toward a striker to challenge Drogba and Anelka’s place in the team – and provide back up so he can play with two up top.
The real winner though, is quite possibly Fabio Capello. Bridge is not only understudy to Cole at Chelsea but for England as well, and the trouble England have had is that when Cole has been unavaliable, Bridge has occasionally looked a lot less than match-fit. That fateful night at Wembley against Croatia for an example, he looked so far out of his depth, and put in one of the worst England performances in living memory.
So its a good move for Bridge, I think. He can prove himself to be better than that night and perhaps finally stop setlling for being worse than Ashley Cole.
