No Credit Crunch in Manchester. Apparently.
By: Rob | December 3rd, 2008
Mark Hughes has told his Manchester City bosses he wants a keeper in the transfer window, and they have responded exactly as he would have wanted, presumably, as they have reportedly spoken to the agent of Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas, to ask if a bid would be welcome by the player.
The club’s owners, completely ignoring the fact the world seems to be coming to a grinding halt all around them, have said they would be willing to pay as much as £129m on the keeper. Which frankly is absurdity defined.
Apparently, despite reports to contray, Sparky is in complete control of his transfer targerts too.
“We want the right players who will take this club forward and through discussions and meetings between myself, Mark Hughes and his technical staff, we have identified a list of targets,” City executive chairman Garry Cook told the Manchester Evening News.
“We will be working to bring those players to the club ourselves and we have not given another party or individual a mandate to negotiate on our behalf: in spite of recent reports, we are not using intermediaries to negotiate with players. In fact, only last week we refused two agents permission to seek out players on our behalf.
“Mark Hughes and I very recently met with the chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, to discuss this matter and we are all in agreement: that the mandate for seeking out and securing new playing personnel for Manchester City Football Club is ours and ours alone.
“Furthermore, we would also like to assure everyone concerned that we are committed to recruiting only those players who we consider to be the very best and most suitable for Manchester City Football Club in the future.”
So good news for Manchester City. It seems a bit odd though to me. I can’t get a job because nobody wants to employ anyone in the current credit crisis, and just down the road they are talking about spending over £100m! On a keeper! The world, is officially mad.

Look at it this way Rob: Manchester City’s oil money will at least help a few clubs – those who receive the totally inflated and obscene transfer fees – get over the financial crisis. So there is a charity aspect to it I guess.
Anyway, hope your job situation improves despite the global meltdown!

Thanks Jan, I’m sure it’ll sort itself out in time.
And yeah, perhaps someone spending wildly will help keep Football going. Its certainly going to make January more interesting than it would have been.

Jan makes a good point. Let’s say for example that City offer Valencia similar money for David Villa. Valencia would have to accept it, it’d allow them to keep the rest of their squad and settle some debts too. In a way, it’s a good thing for football. The joy of Arab philanthropists.

Rob I’m right there with you. No job luck in three months. So I spend my days here, writing about something I enjoy.
I feel like the January transfer activity will be few and far between – save for a few potential fire sales.

Travis – It is really nice to have this here, isn’t it?
It will be interesting to see how Man City get on. I started a game on FM09 with them for kicks to see what kind of side I could build, and ended up with the most crazy team you could imagine. Robinho, Steven Ireland already, Dida, Mutu, Cassano, Arshavin added. It didn’t last long before they all started fighting, obviously.

You just have to wait for that 100 million to trickle down to you

if casillas went to city i think hart would be looking for a new home. hmm lets see what side would be looking for a good young keeper…. oh i know SPURS!!!! then we could get rid of gomes. any way you look at it city are gonna be spending retarded amounts of money in january and probably next summer, lets just hope that if a player wants to continue playing his ball where he is the clubs wont be licking their chops when they see the check books come out. i mean i wouldn’t put it past some clubs to sell players regardless of where they wanna play.
