Barry shocks everyone…then says sorry.
By: Rob | June 3rd, 2009
Well, shut me up. Yesterday, after having vivid flashbacks of last years drawn out transfer sagas (One of which including Gareth Barry) I predicted that Man City’s shock move for Villa man Barry wouldn’t be that easy. And yet I was wrong, he’s signed at Eastlands.
He has written a long apology in the Birmingham Mail explaining his motives.
So looking at the apology, has he got his head screwed on properly?
The key points that seem to come from the letter are that
i) he was worried it’d go a bit stale at Villa
ii) he wanted to join a club that’d win something
iii) he wanted to avoid a long drawn out saga
iv) he feels he’s more likely to get in the England team at City
He doesn’t mention his 100k a week contract curiously. Anyway, to go through the points, first off, well he’s clearly never heard of Paolo Maldini, eh?
Joining a club that will win things – well that seems a bit odd too. Not because City won’t (Certainly from their perspective signing Barry is a move in the right direction) but because as I was saying yesterday, two clubs in the Champions League Arsenal and Liverpool were previously interested in him, and if he had of waited and maybe kicked up a little fuss, he’d have a got a move to one of them, who are more likely to win something next season than City are, as things stand.
Wanted to avoid a long drawn out saga – well yes, us too. Hopefully all the other clubs will take heed and make this summer better than last summer.
I don’t understand the idea he’s more likely to get in the England team at City. As club captain at Villa he’s going to play every week, and if he plays well enough Don Fabio will pick him.
Mind you he is on twice as much money than he would be at Arsenal or Liverpool. But that couldn’t be it, could it?

Players want to get paid… if you weren’t working for the family business and another company came along and offered to pay you more, we all would take it if the job was the same. He never said Villa was his boyhood team (did he? I don’t know).
And I actually believe that Liverpool’s inability to get a deal done last summer jaded Barry. Villa posted a price on his head and Pool tried to negotiate, nickel and dime the price down… attempting to devalue the asset. City, albeit with the bags and bags of money, at least were willing to pay what it took to get the job done. True, there is something to say for smart buys and fiscal responsibility, especially now, but this isn’t irrational exuberance either. Smart buy for City, taking advantage of their assets. L’pool could’ve splashed the extra cash last year, they didn’t think the player was worth it.

Birmingham City were his boyhood club, but he has been at Villa since his teens.
I’m not saying that he shouldn’t go for better money, what I’m more saying is he should be a bit more honest if that is the motivation.

agreed rob. if a player came along and said “yeah i did it for the money” i think everyone would be so shocked at the honesty that they would end up admiring him for the honesty anyway
