Are Manchester City actually as stupid as we take them for?
By: Rob | May 9th, 2009
Another week, another £50m megastar has spurned Manchester City in a transfer that was never ever going to happen. Raúl has apparently told City where to put it. You know, the Raul who has spent 156 years at Real Madrid, and despite occasional noises of discontent (in the galacticos era) he’s always been loyal to Real.
After the whole Kaka affair, which seemed to end up being a clever PR gamble by the detestable Silvio Berlusconi, I have to wonder – were Manchester City really in for Raul, or Buffon, or Henry, or Villa, or Eto’o? Because every week it seems some superstar or other is saying “yeah…no thanks” to City.
Or are the press just bored and trying to create easy stories?
Because as rich as City clearly are, obviously they aren’t going to be able to buy Raul – or any other top-level superstar. They can offer money sure, but after that? Fergie complained for years that players would rather go to London than Manchester which always left him at a disadvantage, so what hope do a club not in the Champions League have?
We’re supposed to believe the Press image of the Man City owners – who played into it themselves with their early talk of turning City into a superclub – who are these naiive idiots who have no idea about the game and what players want. Do you know what? I don’t think its true anymore, even if it was true to begin with. I think they know exactly what they’re in for. I haven’t for example seen an actual quote, recently at least, saying they wanted to buy every bloody player in the world.
The lucked out with Robinho – he gets alot of stick, but at the end of the day, he burned his bridges in Madrid thinking Chelsea wanted him, and then The Blues decided he was too expensive and basically left him with absolutely nowhere to go. City gave him a way out to an extent, and indeed a lease of life to some degree. You can’t blame him for taking it – it was that or the Real bench.
However, they got Robinho partly because it was a surprise move. Now clubs are aware of City’s position, they’re not going to benifit in exactly the same way.
That isn’t to say they can buy no-one. Certainly, they’ll be able to buy a whole host of players over the summer. But it is possible that there will only be a certain type of player that they’ll be able to get – a slightly damaged player.
They’ll be able to get greedy players sure, and then there are the ones who have some other temprement problem – off the top of my head someone like Cassano (I’m not saying they can/will sign Cassano) who is a talented player, but has severe temprement issues, that might preclude the top clubs from getting him. After that they can probably get a few lesser players on the way out of Valencia, and most players who are in and around the same sort of position City are in the table. There’s also the “MLS Option” of just buying once-great players well past their use-by dates looking for some nice retirement money.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see next season’s City – a renegade bunch of the above – it could either be the most brilliantly explosive team of the ever, or a team that is just going to go bang in their faces. Possibly both.
They should keep Mark Hughes, but I don’t think they will. There is no doubt in Sparky’s ability as a manager – he nearly got Wales to a World Cup! – but he needs to have some element of control, and I think the owners will want to bring in their own man who will be able to start building this new City from scratch.

‘Or are the press just bored and trying to create easy stories?’
From what I remember, it first surfaced from Marca yesterday…but then Raul did confirmed today that City made contact through his agent.Anyhow, the Real captain is not heading anywhere, by the way – http://football.uk.reuters.com/uk/news/SP415782.php
To be honest, I was caught off-guard when I read about it yesterday. Raul and Manchester City, I thought I fell off from the sofa when I first learned about the news!

The story is true, City did make contact. But why are they offering huge deals to players who aren’t influenced by money, like Kaka and Raul?
Of course, I assume these silly deals are just a smokescreen for City’s proper business this summer.

So they are as stupid as we take them for? Right. Unless it is just a smokescreen, in which case, well they could be cleverer than all of us.
But I doubt it.

Well, it all depends on who’s deciding these transfer targets. I’d say if it were up to Sparky then he’d go for realistic targets. But for the owners it’s all about raising the profile of the club.
So I’d say that the owners are a stupid as we take them for but that Sparky isn’t.

Oh I’ve got a lot of respect for Mark Hughes – I wonder if he’ll secretly be glad to be chucked out the door so he doesn’t have to put up with quite so much madness from above.

First of all, Rob, I visited this section of the offside by accident. I read your last 3 articles today. You have a new follower. Rarely you find such a quality writer. Keep it up.
Terry Yorath lead Wales to a more impressive Journey once, but where is that guy? So I am not sure if National teams success is a sign that show the coach quality to coach a team (club) which requires more than selecting players who are doing well in their own clubs putting a game strategy the way it goes for national teams.
Regarding Man City (I worked in dubai) so I can tell that the financial capacity of the owners is more than anyone can imagine. But I doubt they are stupid (not anymore at least). And They have more consultants for everything than the number of fans of some clubs.
At the beginning they definitely wanted a fast transition to top, no matter how much that may cost. I can insure you that. One of the things about them is that they don’t have the patience for long term planning. If you have the resources to reach the objective in one day, why waiting for a week? Time is more valued than money for them. They are too wealthy to worry, few hundreds of millions is a tip for those who own a country floating on an ocean of oil.
Regarding Raul issue. I think they were damaged by the Kaka thing. Now any player who accept going to Man city will be labeled as a machinery. So players like Messi, eto’o, Torres, Vila… will not consider that option. BUT if you succeed to sign a player like Raul, that bad image will collapse, and it will be a bridge for them to bounce back, hunting the targets they want. There is only a slim chance for this kind of attempts/strategies to work, but what will they lose after all? the targets they can sign now (the type of players you mentioned) will always be there. So why not at least trying to open more doors?

“There’s also the ‘MLS Option’ of just buying once-great players well past their use-by dates looking for some nice retirement money.”
I love how people will take a swipe at MLS whenever given a chance to.

Well firstly – thanks alot Ramzi! It means alot when someone takes the time to stop by and appriciate what you’re doing, so thank you.
As for them bidding for everyone and anyone, I can see what you’re getting at – and you are right if they sign someone. The problem is, if they don’t, and the longer they don’t they veer more toward being a laughing stock than a top football club.

Travis – You know what I was getting at though, the Beckham/Freddie sort of player would presumably be quite interested in City at the moment, I didn’t mean it as a slight on the MLS as a whole.

With all the rediculous money being thrown around by City, I do think that they have made some positive signings. After Robinho, they brought in Vincent Kompany, Nigel De Jong, Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy and Shay Given. All quality players. I think this has shown intent to contend by Citeh by building a strong team, not just one with the best players that money can buy. I don’t agree with the stupid amounts of money that these players are getting, or that Citeh are bidding on everyone under they sun, but maybe they are just growing into this relativly new amount of money they have been handed and are just finding their feet on the transfer market….or they are just plain stupid.
