A Drum Roll…Followed by a fart

By: Rob | January 19th, 2009

Is that a golf club?Manchester City unveiled their new signing this week, and despite the saga of the last week linking them to Brazil-born one-time Ballon d’Or winner Ricky Kaká, the player they actually signed was…Craig Bellamy.

Yes, That Craig Bellamy.

Mark Hughes is enthusing about how good a player Bellamy is, but I don’t see it. I don’t see that he’s actually any better than the forward players Manchester City already have, and he isn’t a particuarly prestigous player – so why on earth have City spent a reported £14m on him?

All the talk from behind the scenes at City has been about how they want to be the biggest football club in the world, and they’ve suckered us all in to an extent, with the endless speculation about which players they were going to buy – Kaká included.

I mean I don’t want to suggest that Bellamy is an awful player – but he’s hardly top level of the Premier League, and indeed with reports today that Kaká signing for City would be dependent on the team they plan to build, it seems an odd buy.

I mean, I can’t imagine the following conversation:

Mark Hughes: Come on Ricky, we want to build a team of world beaters around you
Kaká: I dunno, who else are you buying
Hughes: Well, we’ve got Craig Bellamy in
Kaká: Where do I sign? I’ve always wants to play with him.

Maybe I’m being too harsh. Instead of the prestige buys that City have been talking up, maybe this is one that Sparky actually wanted, and so in that sense it should be a welcome buy. But in that case, shouldn’t he be thinking about a DM or a centre half?

I totally agree about the call on Bellamy being mediocre. I’m just glad Redknapp didn’t get him, that’s the last thing Spurs needed.

On the other hand, City are supposed to close the De Jong deal today. That’d be a player that Kaka might be a little more impressed with.

The De Jong deal is done. Hamburg have accepted City’s bid (€20.5M) and De Jong’s agent is working out a new contract with City. Nigel still maintains he is an HSV guy and has the final say in the matter, but he is in line to make something like €5-6M from City, and at HSV he was making like €2.5M.

Well look at it this way.

As much as I hate citeh and all they’re trying to do I guess they’re not exactly in an ideal league position to buy top class players, I’m pretty sure no one wants to come to a team in thirteenth place and at the expense of European football.

Chelsea could bring the bigger stars in because they were in a decent league position before. Around the sixth place mark I believe.

Either way, hate them both, cba to pay attention to what’s going on anymore.

You gotta be kidding me… Bellamy? The club is quickly turning into a joke. You’ve got the world at your feet and…… you go for Bellamy.
