The Race for the Champions League hots up
By: Rob | February 22nd, 2010An interesting set of results over the weekend, that leaves that race for 4th, and with it the coveted Champions League spot more open than ever, with, as you can see below, just a point seperating four sides.
Man City are in the prime position with a game in hand, but the next team they face is Chelsea, which is obviously a massive, tough match for them. They were playing Liverpool the weekend in a game so uninspiring I lost the will to live just thinking about it.
Aston Villa also have a game in hand on Spurs, and only a point less than City and if their demolition job at the weekend is anything to go by they are definitely one to watch.
Similarly, it might be too soon to rule out Everton who’ve beaten Man United and Chelsea over the last couple of weeks. They have a bit of ground to catch up, and the sheer numbers might make it tricky, but they are the form side.
Spurs goal difference is worth noting, its notably better, and that could come in absolutely vital by the end of the season – it really is that close.
Liverpool meanwhile are in the worst position of the lot, and judging by the weekend’s performance against Man City they really are treading water untill Fernando Torres regains full fitness. This season, that might not be enough.
Ultimately, it is probably going to come down to games between these sides. With 13 or so games left, that’s quite a few chances for these to bang heads, and I’m relishing it. As long as they don’t play like City and Liverpool did at the weekend.
Who are you guys backing for the Champions League spot?

Liverpool have easier fixtures towards the end. I hope they dont make it though. And Aquilani scores all their goals from now.
