Premier League Clubs: No Good At Learning

By: Rob | July 19th, 2010

Liverpool5771372 are offering Joe Cole 90k a week to come play for them.

Now I am a huge, huge fan of Joe Cole. He is one of the few Premier League players I would happily pay to see regardless of what club he was playing for. I spent half the summer on my knees in front of Fabio Capello telling him to just play him.

Liverpool are in absurd debt. There was talk of them, without the Champions League this season of course, having to flog off Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard just to help out with those debts. Instead they are spending 90k a week on a 28 year old midfielder.

Alright, so there’s no transfer fee, but that is still quite a lot of money to be throwing at a player week on week in a presumably fairly long term contract. For a club which is so badly in debt, its madness really.

Though, I do think Joe Cole could do really great things at Liverpool. So there you go.

Presumably would be played out wide, where Liverpool have sometimes been found wanting under Rafa Benitez, Cole could link up well with Torres and take the “Creating stuff for Torres” weight off of Steven Gerrard.

Also with there not being a transfer fee as such, it is a way of being able to say to Gerrard and Torres that the club is building to a brighter, (more debt-ridden) future.

Breaking: Joe Cole has signed for Liverpool on a four year contract at £90k a week. Not bad if you can get it, eh.

It’s really a dangerous wage for a player that has had injuriy issues in the past. It’s even borderline crazy when looking at Liverpool’s financial situation. But assuming Insua goes for 5m, that will cover the base of Cole’s salary(not incentives or signing bonus).

Maybe the name recognition and selling of shirts would make it more attractive to potential buyers.

All I do know is that, while a very interesting signing, Liverpool still have some critical issues to deal with in terms of their squad.
