Liverpool Stuff Newcastle to move clear at top

By: Rob | December 28th, 2008

Alonso capped off the winFirst off, an apology. I know that unlike every sane league in the world the EPL plays more games over the Christmas period, rather than none, and I’ve been relaxing enjoying my Christmas. Anyway, I’m back and I’ll be bringing a half-term report soon.

But first, todays early-kick off bought about a surprisingly easy victory for Liverpool over Newcastle. Newcastle, who have recently been enjoying a renaissance as Joe Kinnear has settled in, were made to look absolutely pedestrian by a Liverpool side that has really struggled for goals recently.

Liverpool now sit four points clear of Chelsea, with the London club playing a derby match with Fulham as I type (Its 1-1 as I do).

Liverpool dominated from the off, and Shay Given was forced to make half-a-dozen quality saves, before Steven Gerrard (who else?) broke the deadlock after half an hour. His cross was nodded in by Hyppia five minutes later to put Liverpool two-up. Newcastle got an unlikely goal back before half time.

Ryan Babel took advantage of some agonising defending, and Gerrard added another, before Xavi Alonso whacked home a penalty to cap off a great performance and statement of intent from the league leaders.

Can this really be the year Liverpool get back to winning the league?

As a very casual EPL-follower, I hope they can go all the way. Chelsea-ManUtd has been pretty boring over the last 5 years or so, and Arsenal clearly can’t make a challenge. I just keep waiting for Liverpool to flame out though.
