Is Rafa about to go Keegan on us?
By: Rob | January 9th, 2009
Today, as you will have read, Rafa Benitez finally lost his temper with Sir Alex of Fergie’s mind games, as the Liverpool manager unvieled a massive tirade against the Manchester United boss. You’ll also recall – probably fondly, unless you live on the Tyne – that Fergie famously made Kevin Keegan snap whilst manager of Newcastle, on his way to devestating Newcastle’s 12 point lead and nicking the title for Man United. Don’t forget Keegan’s rant, above, was ranting about Fergie complaining about fixtures.
My question is, are we going to be thinking “Ah, that’s where Rafa lost it” at the end of the season?
To me its clear what Fergie’s motive is, he’s seen is side is slightly behind the leaders, and wants to create an “Us” against “Them” mentality in his squad, which as any amatuer psychologist will tell you (I have an A-Level), that is always, always a big plus.
So why is Rafa feeding into it?
Of course, Rafa is trying to flip in on its head and become the “Us” and make United the “Them”. but in losing his temper, it seems once again that it is Fergie that is in control, and indeed, Rafa seems nervous, agitated and angry.
On the other hand, if Liverpool continue to lead the league – and if Man United win on Sunday they can open up a gap – then it might look like a piece of genius. It is good to see Rafa playing “The Game” either way.
So has Rafa lost it? Where he should be calmly revelling in the fact that he is leading (Think what José would do – dismiss Fergie’s complaints calmly), and the fact that it is a club that Fergie openly despises, he’s starting to look uncomfortable.
