EPL Ramblings & Transfer Gossip
By: Wayne Farry | January 20th, 2009
Strange night, last night. Was up ’til all hours and it was then that I saw the Robinho story break. Seeing it on most football websites, the Daily Mail website and Sky Sports News had me convinced that he had in fact left due to a bust-up. I felt comfortable posting it up.
Then I turn on the television to find out that he did, in fact, leave to go to see his family as some things had come up and he has since stated his commitment to Man City. There’s one thing I have learned from this, never, ever read the Daily Mail!
So, after all that it’s time that we look through a few transfer rumours and such.
According to The Sun Online, Wilson Palacios has signed for Spurs. Not a great source, but this deal is inching closer and closer. The only snag so far has apparently been Daniel Levy’s proposed structuring of the payment towards Wigan. Steve Bruce went so far as to say that Levy wants to pay it ‘over 55 years’. An exaggeration, perhaps but not being Levy’s tightness.
Many websites and TV channels are reporting that Liverpool paperweight Jermaine Pennant has joined Portsmouth on loan until the end of the season. It’s a good move for Tony Adams, who stated very openly that he wanted to bring the player in. Why Pennant has decided to go to the South coast instead of Spain or Italy is beyond me.

Man City are reported to be looking at hijacking Arsenal’s move for Zenit’s Andrei Arshavin. Arsenal have been in talk with Zenit for a while now but shockingly, a fee hasn’t been agreed, which can only really be put down to Arsene Wenger’s frugality when it comes to parting with notes. This one might have some legs.
And last and probably least, apparently Nani is afraid that he’s unwanted at Man Utd after reports surfaced that Fergie wants to make a bid for Antonio Valencia of Wigan!
Didn’t Fergie say he’d buy no-one in January?

Yeah, I really think something could happen with the Arshavin one. Look forward to seeing what you’ll post J.

Don’t forget, we’re supposedly in for Valencia as well.

I think every top team’s been linked with Valencia. Not sure if he’d prosper in the high-pressure environment though…

‘Didn’t Fergie say he’d buy no-one in January?’
He did said something like that.Wayne, you know there is something I used to learn from my own father when it comes to the football transfer window. Anything that occur during the transfer window, he will not believe it until it is slammed shut. The whole Manchester City and Kaka saga is one example, even if I told my father that the deal is officially off.
But then again, didn’t when the previous transfer window was closed, did we still hear of Cristiano Ronaldo and those Real Madrid rumours soon after?

Yeah Diana, you can’t believe any rumours, however likely or close they seem to be done, until you see that player in his new team’s jersey you can’t believe it!
And you’re right that anything can happen before the transfer window ends. The last few days of the transfer window are always incredibly busy and literally anything can happen in the last 24 hours of it…
I think the Cristiano Ronaldo rumours about Madrid will never go away. I think until the day comes that he’s playing for Los Merengues – and I’m sure that day will come sometime – we won’t hear the end of the rumours. Some rumours just never end.

did you think nani’s pretty damn decent performance has cooled the fergs ambition on valencia? i was kind of thinking he was trotting on nani to showcase for a potential sale

Nani’s performance was good, no doubt. But it’s all but impossible to predict what’s going on in Fergie’s head.
I personally think that selling Nani to buy Valencia would be an exercise in futility. Nani’s inconsistent but no more than Ronaldo used to be and he really showed tonight what he can do. Valencia’s good but I just don’t think he’s at the level required to make the grade at United.
Keep Nani, I say. Let Chelsea have Valencia.

Why does every transfer with Spurs seem like it takes an eternity to complete? I swear I read reports last week saying the Palacios deal is “done and dusted”…

Anthony, I think that Spurs are one of these clubs that try to pay as little as possible for whoever they’re after. It makes sense, but can sometimes put the transfer at risk, just look at their dire attempts to sign Diego Milito and Sergio Garcia during the summer transfer window.
