Chelsea’s 86 Game Home Record Ends as Liverpool go Top.
By: Rob | October 26th, 2008Liverpool were the team that finally ended Chelsea’s 86 game undefeated streak at Stamford Bridge after Xabi Alonso’s deflected shot trickled in past Petr Cech. The game wasn’t a thriller, but Liverpool have truly announced themselves at title contenders – this season so far they’ve beaten Manchester United at Anfield and now Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s incredible run of games at home started 4 years ago, way back under Ranieri, and it does feel like the end of an era. I think its difficult to understate the damage it might do to Chelsea as well – suddenly they seem beatable at the Bridge when so long it seemed like all any side could hope for was a draw.
Liverpool will love to be the side that has ended that run as well. The previous record was set by Liverpool at Anfield and that run was ended by Chelsea. The New Money and History rivalry has really come to the fore in the last few years as well – especially with the sides drawing each other so often in the Champions League.
The goal was not a great one, a deflected shot from Alonso bounced past Cech who couldn’t flick out a foot toward it, but I don’t think that will dull the party on Merseyside this evening. They really have cemented their place as geniune title contenders – and it couldn’t come at a better time for them, with Manchester United just one title behind their record.
