No Thrilling Last Day Survival Battle
By: Rob | April 26th, 2010Farewell Burnley, it was nice to have you, but really you just weren’t quite good enough. 13 defeats in their last 16 games has proved not enough, unsurprisingly and a battering from troubled Liverpool sent them heading back to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.
We should probably prepare our goodbyes to Hull too, who after the last day miracle last season, need something even bigger if they are to survive this year. With two games to go, they sit six points back from West Ham, and have a goal difference that is so so much worse, that frankly they are already down.
So it is with great disappointment that there will be now last day survival scrap. If you are a supporter of West Ham, Wigan, Bolton or Wolves, you probably are quite pleased though.
Meanwhile at the top Chelsea sent out a hell of a statement to Man United, demolishing nothing-to-play-for Stoke 7-0, including a hat trick for Soloman Kalou.
United had briefly moved to the top of the table following a big win against Spurs, but Chelsea regained their one point advantage, and face Liverpool next weekend as they edge closer to the title.
Liverpool won’t particularly want to gift wrap a 19th title to Manchester United (which would overtake Liverpool’s own record) but fighting as they are for a Europa League Spot, they need the points as much as anyone.
So at least there could be some twists and turns in the title race just yet.

Yep, as a Wolves fan, quite happy with the absence of a last day survival battle.

I am surprised anyone is not describing Hull as already relegated. Back in 2004 when Man City opened up a six point gap on Leeds with two games to go and a similar goal difference (maybe it was a bit more), everyone treated Leeds as relegated, including the little Leeds kid who famously cried after they got beat by I believe Bolton.
I think the moral of this story is don’t change your manager in a relegation dogfight, and if you absolutely have to, get someone in who is top class. Phil Brown deserved the sack but to sack him for Ian Dowie made no sense whatsoever. Whereas West Ham stuck with Zola and the team rallied around him in the end. I feel some sympathy for Burnley as I think Coyle would probably have kept them up, or at least alive until the final day.
On another note, official congrats to Daryl on Wolves’ survival!
