Should John Terry be appealing?

By: Rob | September 15th, 2008

One of the biggest talking points of the weekend has been John Terry’s attempted Rugby tackle against Manchester City on Saturday. The defender saw red for the foul, which he has now appealed against. You can watch it below. Debate and a Vote after the jump.

Its now been pointed out the Tackle isn’t there, but you can see it on Daryl’s post on the mainpage HERE, its the last video. You can also see it here

So should John Terry be appealing against this? Views seem pretty split down the middle which I find interesting. Alot of people are saying that because Terry was not the last man, He should not have got the red card. The rules however, do not say anything about a last man.

Terry has obviously made the foul, to stop the player going through on goal, and is thinking if he takes a yellow card for the team then no real harm is done. Of course with a red card it mean he’ll miss Chelsea’s big game against Manchester United. It is a terribly cynical foul, and Terry has made no attempt to play ball, in fact he’s missed with his hacking down of Jo and as Jo just about gets past him he tries to Rugby Tackle him down. The ref has dismissed him for dangerous play.

Now although it isn’t dangerous in my book, it is horribly cynical. I’m not sure how you Offsiders feel about the “taking one for the team” mentality, but I think its terrible. He obviously thought Jo had a good chance to score or he wouldn’t have bothered doing it. If the red card is taken away, then it just promotes this kind of attitude, which I think would be the wrong call.

Nemanja Vidic was booked for a similar foul in Manchester United’s game against Liverpool. Consistancy is being called for, and although Vidic was sent off later for making another foul, the argument stands that if Terry walked so should Vidic – I agree, they both should have been sent off. Terry finds out his fate tomorrow.

How do you feel Offsiders?

Should Terry be successful in his appeal?

John Terry’s tackle isn’t in that video.

From the clip I saw, there didn’t seem to be any significant contact, not dangerous play. Yellow card certainly but seems harsh.

Jo’s a flopper though, like all Brazilians it seems.

it was a flop (a good flop btw) and not worthy of a Red. I suppose a yellow but it was a ridiculous call.

There is no way that is a red card. Yes, it is a foul, and it should have been a yellow card. The officiating in this game was horrible through and through – starting with the freekick given to Robinho (very questionable) and a clear penalty for Anelka which which was not awarded. You would think the supposed “best league in the world” could get better quality officials.

nah i have no sympathy for him- even though it isn’t last man you have two quality attackers against carvalho. as good as he is it may as well have been last man. no attempt at ball at all- messi should apologise because that is truly anti-football.

This is from the FA website http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/RulesAndRegulations/FIFALawsOfTheGame/Postings/2002/05/12117.htm

“A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

    1. is guilty of serious foul play

    or

    6. denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick”

    As opposed to:

“A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he commits any of the following seven offences:

    1. is guilty of unsporting behaviour (Diving, Harsh Challanges-previously known as Ungentlemanly Conduct)”

If you think this is just ungentlemanly conduct then, it should just be a yellow.

It looks a lot like #6 to me.

In my opinion it does not look like Serious Foul Play.

Oh and I’m not from Malaysia, the flag thing is really just a random flag generator sometimes.
