Mutu: Paying Chelsea is ‘Inhumane’

I can\'t believe I lost my dealers numberYou might remember Adrian Mutu, Prem-Lovers. You also might recall that he left Chelsea under a cloud (he sneezed on his way out) after a cocaine scandal that led to him getting his P45. You also might recall that FIFA agreed with Chelsea that he should have to pay Chelsea the remainder of his contract. Mutu, who’s carrer was rescued by Juve before he moved on to Fiorentina, has described the ruling today as ‘Inhumane’.

FIFA’s decision was unfair and inhumane. I don’t consider that I did something so serious that I have to pay such a huge sumMy lawyers are analysing the case and we’ll appeal against the FIFA decision. Chelsea will not do what they want

I know the Offside is divided about this, but I think its ridiculous. Yes, Mutu had a drug problem (It stands to reason that he isn’t the only one – Rich young men with too much time on thier hands? Guarentee there are a few more Coke-Hounds out there) yes its bad, and yes he’s an idiot for taking it.

But – aside from the obvious stupidy of having to pay a man who owns more money than God millions of pounds – Mutu was fired by Chelsea. It just doesn’t make any sense to me really. If Mutu would have been incompacitated by his drug habit and thus couldn’t fulfil his contract then fine, ask for the money. But that isn’t the case, he was playing, Chelsea didn’t want a coke-fiend in the squad so they sacked him. They decided, effectively, that they no longer wanted Mutu’s services. So he shouldn’t have to pay them.

I also agree with Eric Cantona, who was talking about Diego Maradona’s cocaine habit, when he said [this is a rough quote, but the gist is right]
“I would prefer if a player didn’t take drugs, but I’d rather that a player went out and did a social drug on wednesday and then was fine to play on Saturday, than one who took performance enhancing drugs”

At the end of the day, Mutu was not cheating, he was taking a social drug. While stupid, it could have been alot worse. At the end of the day, if Joe Bloggs was sat around in his run of the mill job, and was fired for having a bit of a drug habit (not the case, or quite a chunk of a generation would be sacked) then they would not have to pay the rest of thier contract back.
