Lampard calls for communication from Ref’s
By: Rob | February 5th, 2009
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has spoke out about the referring situation in England at the moment after his red card against Liverpool was rescinded. The England international was careful not to attack ref’s, even invoking the R-word, but said that ref’s ought to talk to their linesmen a little more.
“I presumed it would be rescinded. I was confident. It was a mistake but referees need time to consult the other officials – there are four and they get different angles. They need to use common sense – I don’t want to have a dig at referees because they do a very hard job and I respect them”. The Chelsea man told Radio Five.
And if all thats a bit…well obvious, then it does beg the question – Why don’t ref’s use their assistant’s and the fourth official?
The used to be linesmen. That was when they literally just delt with offsides and throws. They were then promoted to “Assistant Referees”, and they got given a fourth official, whose job seems to be to hold up the board at the end of the game to tell you how many minutes are left.
The assistant-ref thing is to try and get to the level of Rugby, where Ref’s are constantly asking Touch Judges their view on 90% of descions. But ref’s, who spend alot of time complaining they do a difficult job, seem to not want to have this level of communication in Football.
Indeed, they are all wired up to talk to one another, and can do it while the game is playing, so they don’t even have to stop the game. And in the case of Lampard’s sending off, he could ask his linesmen what they thought, and they might have had a better view and said that actually it was not a red card offence.
Its oddly obvious, and undoubtedly some ref’s do implement it. You do see it when the ball bounces on the line alá 1966, but I would like to see it happen a bit more often.
