Has Petr Cech become a bit of a liability?

By: Rob | September 26th, 2009

Chelsea’s 100% record came to a rather abrupt end this afternoon, after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Wigan Athletic. It was quite an even game, but the turning point came when Petr Cech was sent off for bringing down Hugo Rodallega in the box and left Chelsea struggling.

So now all the “Big Four” have lost at least one game, and its still early days, its still anyone’s title. Especially now Fernando Torres has remembered to pack his shooting boots.

Chelsea will recover, but there has to be some question marks over Petr Cech, who over the last couple of seasons has gone from being the most incredibly reliable goalkeeper in the league, to someone you might not even trust anymore.

It all of course goes back to the horrendous head injury caused by Stephen Hunt back in 2006. Before that injury, he was the most dominating goalkeeper in the league, and a contender – along with Buffon and Casillas – for the title of the best goalkeeper on the planet.

But since that injury, there have been a noticable difference in his game. In Euro 2008 he let down the Czech Republic in that incredible game against Turkey, and questions about his goalkeeping ability have been raised this season and his mistake count has noticibly gone up over the last couple of years.

If he can’t get his form back, it raises a problem for Chelsea. They only have Hilario as back up, who is hardly a world beater himself. And I dunno if you remember but they aren’t exactly able to rush out and buy someone if they Cech loses his confidence altogether.

Mind you – he wasn’t the only goalkeeper to have a bad afternoon Chris Kirkland should never have been letting Chelsea get their only goal of the afternoon from there.

I’m not the kind of person who likes to watch Goalkeepers fail – I had to watch Cech’s Euro 08 error through my fingers – and I really would like to see him get back his form, I mean, it wasn’t exactly his fault he got kicked in the head. But I do wonder if we’ll ever see the Petr Cech from the video below again. He was a beast.

The Red might have been a bit harsh, but if it looked to him like an obvious goal scoring opportunity than it is absolutely.

The red seems to have been a result of Cech’s flailing leg. He’d already been beaten by Rodallega and he lifted his leg a bit which tripped up Hugo. I think by obstructing the clear goalscoring opportunity (as the ref must have felt Cech was beaten), that he got the red.

Yes that’s most certainly how the ref would’ve seen it too. However there’s an argument to be made for not pulling the red card as well. One of the requirements for Denying and Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity is the direction in which the player is going. In this play the player was in the process of going around Cech so he wasn’t headed straight towards the goal. This isn’t to say that it shouldn’t be a red card, this is just pointing out the discussion referees would have about this play, and the discussion that happened I’m sure with this referee and his crew and assessors after the game.
