Why Isn’t Alan Shearer in the Blackburn Running?
By: Rob | December 16th, 2008
Obviously, the big news in the EPL today is that Paul Ince has been given his P45, and everyone is quizziclly stroking their chins about who will be the next Blackburn boss. But while Ince ruminates on where to go next, I put it to you that there is one man who should be in the running for his job. Alan Shearer.
Ever since Kevin Keegan took over at Newcastle, 11 months ago, the whiseprs have been that Shearer has been going to go to Newcastle to become assistant. Then, before Jokin’ Joe took over, rumours were that Shearer wanted to big job. Indeed, he has been flirting with that job like an embaressing drunk at a party.
So why then, has no-one linked him (untill now), with one of his other old clubs. In fact, the club where he should be treated as more of a legend than he is at Newcastle. Alright, so he is a Geordie, but there is the small fact that he was good when he was at Blackburn. Dragging them to a Prem title, being one of the most feared strikers around, banging them in for England, turning down Man United. When he went back home for a then World Record £15m, hopes were high, but to be honest, he never really delivered. He never won a trophy there, and in 1998 suffered a huge injury that he arguably never recovered from. Newcastle sunk down the table after KK left (the first time) and Shearer eventually retired.
And yet, he’s not attached to the Blackburn job, even it seems in passing. I think it’d do him the world of good to get in there and do it, because he’s procastanated so long now, that Newcastle have offered Jokin’ Joe a contract to the end of the season, and even though he was better at Blackburn than he was at Newcastle, there would be less pressure in that “homecoming” than the one he inevitably will make when he joins Newcastle.
And he will join Newcastle someday, that much seems obvious. So it seems like he’d have absolutely nothing to loose by becoming Blackburn boss. Except that comfy Match of the Day chair, of course. Even then, the BBC don’t have much football for him to talk about anymore.
So I say, Shearer, put yourself in the running. I’m not saying he’s the ideal candidate for Blackburn (though he’s better than the Bookies choice), but for him it seems like a great move.
