They’ve Got Sol, and they’re possibly not soldiers.

The revolution WILL be televised afterall. It’ll just be on after Match of the Day on a Saturday night. Yes, i’m talking about the revolution at Notts County, which gathered apace today with the surprise signing of former Arsenal, Spurs, and England defender Sol Campbell.
The oldest club in the world are currently in the footballing doldrums of League Two (the basement of league football, basically) but surprised everyone by nabbing ex-Lazio and England manager Sven Goran Eriksson in some boring non-managerial capacity over the summer. Sol described him today as “a great man”.
Arsene Wenger rationalised it into what we were all thinking:
“It was a surprise, because of the level Notts County play at. That shows you as well how much financial potential Notts County has suddenly.”
Harry Redknapp praised Campbell and basically said that were it not for Sol’s fractious relationship with the Spurs fans (i.e he left them to go play for Arsenal) he’d have signed him up himself. The Sol-man himself was talking up the fact that he got Prem offers, but he clearly hasn’t got that many years left at the top, so would rather spend a few years dragging Notts County up the divisions.
The idea of County reaching the Premier League isn’t as outragous as it initially sounds either – Fulham got bought out by Mohammed Al Fayed when they were struggling in the lower divisions, before a couple of big name managers (including Sven’s England predecessor Kevin Keegan) helped them up to the top level.
On the other side of the coin, Queens Park Rangers are richer than God, but still can’t find a way out of the second tier.
Its going to be fascinating to see which one County turn out to be.

His legacy is secure, he wants to play for several more years, and he’s looking for a challenge other than “keep a bad Premiership team from being relegated.” And he’s getting big gobs of money. So I say best of luck to him there.
