Fábregas accused of spitting as Arsenal waltz through in controversy

By: Rob | March 18th, 2009

Did Fábregas break out the flem?Arsenal have made it to an FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea, at Wembley Stadium after beating Hull City 2-1 last night. The match however was dogged with incident, as Arsenal’s late winner seemed it shouldn’t have stood, Phil Brown refused to shake hands with Arsene Wenger at the end, and then the Hull manager sensationally accused currently-crocked Arsenal man Cesc Fábregas at spitting at the feet of his number two.

Arsenal’s winner came after Nasri hit a long free kick that was flicked on to an offside William Gallas. Arsene Wenger claimed that the Arsenal flick wasn’t the last touch of the ball before it got to Gallas, and thus the defender wasn’t offside.

A bad-tempered Phil Brown appeared before the press after the match to announce that Cesc Fábregas had spat at one of his players, and that Wenger had twice before refused to shake his hand. The acrimony presumably goes back to Hull’s surprise win against Arsenal at the Emirates, which derailed the Gunners season.

Fábregas has denied the spitting.

Typically, Arsene Wenger didn’t see the spitting moment, but said that it would be a “minor thing”. Cesc meanwhile used the club’s website to give a firm denial (as well as admit that Gallas’ goal probably shouldn’t have stood)

“I have never done this in my whole career on the pitch, so why would I do it when I am not even playing? I can understand the frustration of losing a game to a dubious goal, that has happened to me many times in my career as well. But this is not the fault of me or any of the Arsenal players.”

Phil Brown meanwhile went on to show how bad Wenger and his team’s mentality is at the moment

“He wouldn’t shake my hand when we beat them fairly 2-1 at the Emirates, he wouldn’t shake my hand when they beat us, fairly, 3-1 at the KC Stadium.”

Well, for one thing, Wenger did shake Brown’s hand at the previous game at the Emirates, so Brown is just plain lying about that. See it here: http://images.rivals.net/08/09/460×238/Arsene-Wenger-and-Phil-Brown_1237515.jpg

And I would say that Arsenal’s mentality at the moment is actually quite good. The only game we’ve lost in our last 19 was a 1-0 away to Roma, which got us to a penalty shootout so we could advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. We’re still alive in the FA Cup and the Champions League, and are back in the top 4 for the first time in some time. Walcott is back, Adebayor and Fabregas will be back within a couple of weeks, and Arshavin has played brilliantly. I think the mentality of both the players and fans at the moment is overwhelmingly positive.

Brown is just bitter and panicked because his team has plummeted back to Earth and will be back in the Championship where they belong next year, and he’s trying to create a media story to deflect attention from that fact.
