Celebrating Arsenal’s Sexy Football
By: Rob | November 9th, 2009While Chelsea and Man United played out yet another pretty boring 1-0 (to recap, Chelsea beat Man United thanks to a 1-0 win, Man United defended through most, goal came from a dubious Set piece, which John Terry headed in. Main talking point was Drogba being booked for getting in the way of John Evans kung fu kick), another team were looking as exciting as ever. Arsenal.
Yeah, yeah, two of the goals were own goals. But Arsenal are up to 36 goals in 11 Premier League matches. They’ve scored 7 more goals than league leaders Chelsea and have played a game less.
This, is to be celebrated.
According to The Guardian they are 150% more exciting that the League Average, and indeed, in all competitions, as things stand, Birmingham stand to score 100 less goals than Arsenal. Isn’t that incredible?
At current rate of goals, Arsenal stand to score 124 goals, which begs the question – can you imagine a team scoring 124 goals and not winning anything? Obviously its possible as they don’t currently sit top of the league.
They could be top of course, they were unlucky in their two trips to Manchester earlier in the year, but considering that some were predicted they’d fall out of the top four, at the expense of Spurs of Manchester City, its good to see.
Its also good to see Arsene Wenger – who I have confessed my admiration for before – and his plan finally coming to pass. His boys have become men.
And if Arsenal can keep this group of players together, I don’t see why they can’t really dominate the Premier League – they’re young, they can play fantastic football, and they’re only going to get better, scarily.
Especially if Cesc keeps up his current form. The boy is on fire.

Also worth noting–17 different scorers in all competitions, and 26 goals in all competitions from non-strikers. It’s probably the closest thing to Holland’s “Total Football” we’ll see in this day and age.
But there’s still a lot of football left to be played, I think it’s way too early to start talking about 100 goals or other goalscoring records the club can break.

well as a diehard gooner I certainly love this team but after so many false dawns these last 3-4 seasons, I’m just preparing myself for the other shoe to drop.

I’m a Chelsea fan but i must agree – Arsenal’s football right now is so much fun to watch and i’m quite scared what will happen if they can continue. I believe this season the title will be ours, but our squad is starting to move onto the wrong side of 30… If the boys have really grown up the next few seasons will be theirs.

Arsenal is fantstic club…

not so fast people..it happens every season to begin with..if they can continue this until may, I’d be glad they win the league

I am very much so a Premier League neutral, and sexy football is nice and all, but what stuns me about Arsenal is how they manage to constantly churn out brilliant talent, without spending a lot of money. Their record is first-rate, and that is two very admirable goals- to develop young champions, and to be fiscally responsible. Their sexy football is the icing on the cake.

-

wow +1 on goal difference to chelsea only though, even though they have +7 on goals scored. they have yet to beat any of other big 4 teams and your calling them some kind of amazing team? In all fairness the way arsenal are playing is not total football at all. The closest team to total football have been sacchi’s AC Milan. The way they are scoring goals come from midfield, set pieces and from strikers, just like every other team in the world.
Yes arsenal are playing well but they are still leaky and if anything they are still flattering to deceive in games where the teams go for the draw, their improvement in set pieces is what has kept them in the game more then anything else

I don’t know, ish–I think if you watched them play a bit more you would revise your “just like every other team in the world” statement. For one thing, once the ball is advanced into the other team’s half, the three strikers and two of the three midfielders are more or less interchangeable, and everyone is looking to make runs into space. But also the two center-halves, who have produced 8 goals, are not merely scoring from set pieces, but are making runs forward and getting shots and goals from open play.
Completely agree that it’s way too early to crown them as any sort of great team, yet. But man oh man are they fun to watch…

People are high on Arsenal and I think its for good reason. I think this is the year the kids finally “mature” and get it done. Dont forget two years ago they were right there- last year they just got off to a bad start… Easily the most talented team in the league and as long as the D holds up I expect them to do it. I think Wenger will surprise some and make a signing or two in January. I can see Vieira being the final piece of the puzzle now.

most good teams have the ability to have their midfield play up front. manU can with giggs, carrick and valencia. Chelsea can with ballack, deco, lampard, essien all pushing up very high. So can barcelona, real madrid, inter, milan etc.
Yes the CB’s have scored some goals but many of those goals came from set pieces and the few that didnt were just very good strikes from vermaelen(from a distance).
Look at some of chelsea’s games this season and they also punished the small fry(wigan and a.villa withstanding). same goes for manU who have been clugging right along getting results.
i dont mind arsenal i just have a problem with people have a collective orgasm when arsenal play well, yet they are no where in sight when arsenal need to play tough to get results, something arsenal doesnt know how to do.

Arsenal are a great team to watch and would be worthy winners but as one of the writers above said we see this so often only for them to fall away. The difference this year with Arsenal is that they appear to have a squad that can cope more and has more depth than they have had for a long long while so fingers crossed they can see it through but my money is on Chelsea.

-

I disagree a bit. Arsenal’s problem was always that they dropped points vs the lesser teams. And it seems that this year they have gotten it together (apart from 1 draw vs West Ham). 5 points back with a game in hand is hardly “no where in sight”.

“Yes the CB’s have scored some goals but many of those goals came from set pieces and the few that didnt were just very good strikes from vermaelen(from a distance).”
how exactly did you want them to score? these are the CBs we’re talking about remember. i can’t really find fault with CBs that come up and score on set pieces and occasionally make a run from deep and score from outside the box…
and as MoMoney said, 5 points back with a game in hand is pretty nice, and happens to be better than 18 other teams.
finally, arsenal have started “winning tough.” 3-2 comeback away at standard liege after being 2-0 down inside 10 minutes? or, if you’d like a league example, a 1-0 win away against a very solid fulham side. it might actually be the worst 90 minutes the arsenal have played this season, but it was quickly forgotten because they scraped out the win.
while i agree there’s a long way to go, i think you have to give credit where it’s due.

it is just wonderful to be an arsenal fan and read this, recognition, feels good, and…man are they playing beautiful!!
