Andrei Arshavin: You Wouldn’t Like Him When He’s Angry

Don’t make Andrei Arshavin angry. Like the big green comic book character, you would not like him when he’s angry, as Man United learned today. The Russian striker was hacked down in the box by Darren Fletcher and looked extremely frustrated that he didn’t recieve a penalty.

A minute or so later, Arshavin picked up the ball just outside the Man United box and took his anger out on the back of the ball, sending it flying into the Manchester United net, the hit too hot for Ben Foster, who got a glove to it, but not enough to stop it going into the corner of the net.

Wasn’t enough for Arsenal though, who lost 2-1 after a penalty from Wayne Rooney and an own goal from Diaby.

Arsenal might feel somewhat unlucky, over the 90 minutes they were probably the better side, and only a great save from Ben Foster early in the Second Half stopped the Gunners going 2 up. But a cutting pass from Ryan Giggs sent Wayne Rooney through on goal, and Almunia came out and bought him down, Rooney converted the penalty with no mistake.

The second goal was a bit odd – A okay Giggs cross looked to find no-one and Diaby managed to head past his own keeper, who was really in no-mans land.

Arsenal had a goal (rightly) chalked off for Offside at the end of the match, a fuming Arsene Wenger sent off five minutes into injury time. He protested in a pantomime way and went to stand with the Man United supporters.

  The Man U penalty was a terrible decision. Rooney kicked the ball into Row Q and was on his way to the ground before Almunia even got close to him.

  The ref had a very poor game overall.

  I have to agree with Geoff. Wenger gained 50 cool points after the way he stood up in the stands like, YEAH WHAT THE F ARE YOU GONNA DO NOW PUNKZSXZ?

  i’d at least expect mike dean to not publicly hold ferguson’s nuts. won’t give an obvious penalty and then falls for a rooney flop? pathetic.

  i’m most amused by the announcers on fox who 5 minutes before rooney’s dive were saying “thank goodness he’s english.” thank goodness indeed. can’t leave all of the diving to gerrard. where would the three lions be without rooney to dive, too?
